Basic Nutritional Recipes for Dogs

Canine Meat ‘n’ Grain Menu

2 cups cooked brown rice*

1/3 fatty meat

1/3 cup lean meat

(or use ½ cup of lean meat and 2 tablespoons of oil instead of the fatty and lean meat)

¼ grated or chopped vegetables*

Daily supplements as recommended

 

Mix all ingredients together and serve slightly warm.  Or, steam meat and vegetables and then add rice and supplements.

Yield:  about 3 cups

 

Meat-Bean-Rice Dish for Dogs

1 ¾ cups cooked brown rice*

1/3 cup lean meat*

½ cup cooked beans (kidney, black, pinto, navy or lima)

¼ cup grated or chopped vegetables*

1 ½ teaspoons oil*

1 tablespoon nutritional yeast

Daily supplements as recommended

 

Heat the rice, meat and beans together.  Then mix in the rest of the ingredients and serve moderately warm.

Yield:  about 2 2/3 cups

 

Eggs-Soy-Rice

2 ½ ounces tofu (or ¼ cup cooked soy grits)*

2 medium eggs

Daily supplements as recommended

2 tablespoons nutritional yeast

½ teaspoon oil*

2 cups cooked brown rice

½ cup chopped or grated vegetables*

 

Scramble together the tofu, eggs, supplements, yeast and oil.  Add rice and vegetables, along with any flavoring you have on hand and serve. 

Yield:  about 3 1/3 cups

Daily Duo for Dogs

Morning:  Serve as a hot cereal.

1 ½ cups cooked oatmeal*

1 cup whole milk

1 teaspoon honey

 

Evening:  Combine the ingredients and serve warm

1 cup chopped, cooked potatoes*

½ cup lean meat*

1 teaspoon oil*

1 tablespoon grated or chopped vegetables*

Daily supplements as recommended

Yield:  about 4 cups, total

 

Vegetarian Two-Meal Plan

Morning:  Serve as a hot cereal

1 ½ cups cooked oatmeal*

1 cup whole milk

1 teaspoon honey

 

Evening:  scramble together the eggs, soy protein isolate and supplements.  Add the rest of the ingredients and serve.

2 medium eggs*

2 teaspoons soy protein isolate (found in health food stores)

Daily supplements as ecommended

2/3 cup cooked brown rice*

2 tablespoons grated or chopped vegetables

Yield:  about 3 ¾ cups, total

 

Potatoes au Canine

3 cups boiled, sliced potatoes*

½ cup creamed cottage cheese*

1 tablespoon nutrition yeast

¼ cup whole milk*

¼ cup grated cheese*

Daily supplements are recommended

2 tablespoons grated and chopped vegetables*

 

Layers together the potatoes, cottage cheese, yeast, and supplements in a casserole dish.  Pour milk over them and top with grated cheese.  Broil or bake until cheese is melted and slightly brown (about 15 minutes at 350°F).  Let cool.  Serve vegetables on the side.  Or mix all ingredients together while potatoes are hot after cooking, allowing heat to melt in the cheese, then serve.

Yield:  about 4 cups

 

Bulk Versions for Large Dogs

If you have a large dog or several smaller ones to feed and you have the refrigerator space, you may want to cook a large amount in advance.  Here are the amounts for all six dog recipes, multiplied by six.  Each recipes should make enough to feed a 100-pound dog for about two days or a 60-pound do for three days.  Add the recommended supplements fresh daily.

 

Bulk Version of Potatoes au Canine

18 cups (about 7 pounds) boiled, sliced potatoes (or 13 ½ cups cooked brown rice)*

3 cups creamed cottage cheese*

1/3 cup nutritional yeast

1 ½ cups whole milk*

1 ½ cups grated cheese*

¾ cup grated or chopped vegetables*

 

Layer potatoes and cottage cheese in a roaster (or other large pan).  Pour milk over them and top with grated cheese.  Broil or bake until cheese is melted and slightly brown.  Let cool.  Serve vegetables on the side.  Or, mix all ingredients together while the potatoes are still hot, allowing this heat to melt the cheese.

Yield:  about 24 cups

 

Bulk Measure for Eggs-Soy-Rice

1 pound tofu (or 1 ½ cups cooked soy grits)*

1 dozen medium eggs*

¾ cup nutritional yeast

1 tablespoon oil*

12 cups cooked brown rice

3 cups grated or chopped vegetables*

 

Scramble together the tofu, eggs, yeast, and oil.  Add rice and vegetables, along either any flavorings you have on hand.

Yield:  about 18 cups

 

Two Bulk Meals for Dogs

Morning:  Serve the daily ration as a hot cereal, with fresh milk and honey in appropriate daily amounts.

9 cups cooked oatmeal*

 

Evening:  Combine the ingredients and serve the daily ration warm.

6 cups chopped, cooked potatoes*

3 cups lean meat*

2 tablespoons oil*

1/3 cup grated or chopped vegetables *

Yield:  about 18 cups, total

Bulk Vegetarian Two-Meal Plan

Morning:  Serve the daily ration as a hot cereal with fresh milk and honey in appropriate daily amounts.
